While it was not that hot inside of Webster Hall on the 18th, the band did still bring the heat by supplying us with a scorching 23-song set, which also happened to be the longest set of their three-night headlining run at the venue. As dreadful as the existential heat was, the band made me completely forget about the real feel temps of 105º F (40º C) that day and allowed me to completely get lost in the music. Last time we saw Broken Social Scene was on the literal hottest day of 2018 when they headlined Central Park Summerstage. If you haven’t heard 2018 album Laforce yet, you should probably go do so (you won’t be sorry). Here, she shines with her vocals being front and center as well as seeing her dabble in more guitar work than what we see within BSS. Bandmate and husband Andrew Whiteman supplies the guitar work (which was stellar as usual), making this one of the best openers we’ve seen all year. Her solo work is a little different from Broken Social Scene by being more bedroom pop-esque, more indie without the grandiose scope of BSS. If you don’t know, lead singer Ariel Engle is the newest member of the Broken Social Scene family as you can hear her prominently throughout the bands fantastic 2017 release of Hug of Thunder. Opening the night up was Laforce, a band compromised of members of Broken Social Scene. Along for the ride and kicking things off for the night was Laforce. The band has been out on the road in support of both EP’s and on May 18th the band made their triumphant return back to NYC for not one, not two but a three night run as part of the resurrection celebration of Webster Hall. 2 (released 04/12/19) which both were released via Arts & Crafts. 1 (released 02/15/19) and Lets Try the After – Vol. Watch fan-made video below.Earlier this year Broken Social Scene returned with not one, but two excellent EP’s, Lets Try the After – Vol. Streep didn’t bust out a lead vocal or anything, but it’s a lot of fun to watch her holding out her phone - pointedly ignoring the song’s instructions to drop that phone - and filming Ullman and the band all around her. Streep got a cheer from the people who initially recognized her, and then you can hear a buzz in the room where people are telling each other that that’s Meryl Streep right here. Mid-song, though, Ullman went over to the side of the stage and beckoned for Streep to come out, and she emerged. The plan, I’m guessing, was just for Tracey Ullman to sing “Anthems For A Seventeen Year-Old Girl” with Broken Social Scene. Streep’s appearance during last night’s show presumably wasn’t planned.

Ullman got a big, heartfelt introduction, but the band did not say anything about goddamn Meryl Streep being right there. During the encores from last night’s show, the band introduced Tracey Ullman, the former singer and sketch-comedy great who deserves a place in entertainment Valhalla for indirectly causing The Simpsons to exist. BSS marked that occasion with a You Forgot It In People graphic novel and with a tour that wrapped up at New York’s Webster Hall last night. The sight of Streep and her friend Tracey Ullman up onstage with Broken Social Scene deserves cinematic immortality.Ī few days ago, Broken Social Scene’s sweeping, overwhelming indie rock opus You Forgot It In People celebrated its 20th anniversary. Apparently, someone now needs to build a whole indie rock jukebox musical around Streep. Streep has proven that in Ricki And The Flash and, more famously, in two different Mamma Mia movies. We know that three-time Oscar winner Meryl Streep likes to rock out from time to time.
